THE ATHEIST'S COMPLAINT:
Is the devil tied up or free to roam? Some verses say he is tied up (2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6), but others say he is roaming freely (1 Peter 5:8). Is there a contradiction?
Of the 3 texts given by the questioner, only one speaks of the devil, 1 Peter 5:8. The others, 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6 are not about the devil, but about "the angels who sinned" and "did not keep their proper domain". It is a false assumption on the part of the questioner that the devil is one of these angels who sinned. Satan is nowhere called an angel in Scripture, but rather, "the prince of the power of the air" or "the god of this world" (Eph 2:2; 2 Cor 4:4).
Since the verses speak of different persons, there is no contradiction here.
