Answering The Atheist

THE ATHEIST'S COMPLAINT:
Did Jesus say before the rooster crows or before the rooster crows twice? In Matthew 26:34, Luke 22:34 and John 13:38, Jesus only mentions a single crow from the rooster, but in Mark 14:30, Jesus specifically speaks about Peter denying him three times before the rooster crowed twice. Is there a contradiction?

RESPONSE:
Is it contradictory for different writers to give varying degrees of detail? Matthew, Luke and John all mention only one rooster crow, that which would have occurred as the dawn of morning was approaching. In Mark's account, further detail is given, that in fact this would be the second crow of the rooster on that night.

Peter's denials took place between the first crow and the second. The second crow in Mark's gospel is the one which is spoken of by the other gospel writers.

There is no contradiction.
