Answering The Atheist

THE ATHEIST'S COMPLAINT:
Where did Jesus tell his disciples to go after his resurrection? Some texts say Galilee (Matthew 28:10; Mark 16:7), others say Jerusalem (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4). Is there a contradiction?

RESPONSE:
In Matthew 28:10 and Mark 16:7, the Lord's disciples are told immediately after Jesus' resurrection to meet Him in Galilee. They did so, and then spent many days with Him.

In Luke 24:49 and Acts 1:4, just before ascending to heaven, Jesus told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for "the promise of the Father". They did so, and on the day of Pentecost (recorded in Acts 2), they received the promise made.

These are two separate instances, one immediately after the resurrection, and one immediately preceding the ascension. There is no contradiction.
