THE ATHEIST'S COMPLAINT:
Was Lot Abraham's brother (Genesis 14:14, 16) or nephew (Genesis 11:27; 12:5; 14:12)? Is there a contradiction?
RESPONSE:
The Hebrew word ‘ach, which is translated "brother" in Genesis 14:14, 16, can and does refer to more than one's biological brother. The word is translated 332 times as "brethren" in the KJV, which is a generic term used to speak of one's kin, whether immediate or distant. The word might otherwise be translated, "kindred" or "relative". It does not require an immediate relationship.
Perhaps the translators could have supplied a better word in rendering Genesis 14:14, 16 into the English, however, given the fact that other texts (as listed above) demonstrate beyond doubt that Lot was Abraham's nephew, we should conclude that this is indeed a generic use of "brother".
There is no contradiction.
