THE ATHEIST'S COMPLAINT:
Was Jesus’ trial before the Sanhedrin at night (Matthew 26:57-68; 27:1-2) or was it in the morning (Luke 22:66-71; 23:1)?
RESPONSE:
Jesus had been examined, questioned and condemned by the Sanhedrin through the night, as is recorded in Matthew’s gospel account. However, to make the decision of their overnight ‘mock’ trial legal, they met briefly in the morning to pronounce His guilt.
It is not contradictory for Matthew to record the overnight trial and Luke not. Nor is it contradictory for Luke to record the morning “decision” and Matthew not. The writers recorded different moments of the same general event.
There is no contradiction.
