THE ATHEIST'S COMPLAINT:
Who carried Jesus’ cross, Simon of Cyrene (Matthew 27:32) or Jesus (John 19:17,18)?
It is a false assumption by the questioner to conclude that the two statements are mutually exclusive. Certainly, from John’s account, we understand that Jesus did walk under the weight of His own cross, and yet, taking into account Matthew’s report of Simon, we know that Jesus did not do so alone. How far did Jesus go bearing the cross Himself? We are not told. When Simon took up the Lord’s cross, did he bear it by himself, or did he help Jesus along with it? We are not told. However, the two statements can certainly be understood together without contradiction.
There is no contradiction.
