THE ATHEIST'S COMPLAINT:
Why could the men on the road to Emmaus not recognize Jesus? Mark 16:12 says it was because Jesus "...appeared in another form..." However, Luke 24:16 reads, "...their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him."
Is there a contradiction?
RESPONSE:
The questioner makes an unnecessary assumption of what Mark describes. It is not necessary that Mark's description is speaking about Jesus' physical appearance, but rather about how the two on the road to Emmaus perceived Him. Luke gives us greater detail of this situation. He does not refer to Jesus' appearance being changed, but says them men did not know it was the Lord because their eyes were withheld from recognizing him. Certainly if their eyes are restrained, it would appear to them that Jesus was in another form.
There is no contradiction.
