Political Responsibility

Recently, I enjoyed spending a bit of time with brother John Wallace, who works and worships with the Lord's church in Bancroft, Ontario. Brother Wallace is a close friend and mentor of sorts to me, as I spent a considerable amount of time in his home, in the early years of my sojourn as a child of God. In our recent visit, as is often the case when we share time together, among the topics visited were political concerns.

Brother Wallace impresses me a great deal. He is extremely active writing letters to members of parliament, writing letters to the editor on political issues of a moral nature, and does his best to hold those whom we've elected into power accountable to the people.

I suppose some might think such efforts are useless. Other, might say that a Christian's time is better used preaching the gospel instead of watchdoging our politicians. Let me say, we are fortunate to live in a country where our government consists of elected officials. That gives us the opportunity (dare I say also, the responsibility) to influence the decisions which are made in our country. To preserve the freedom we currently enjoy to preach the gospel without fear of torment, we need to be politically active Christians.

The ongoing push of a homosexual agenda in our government's social policies needs to meet opposition by those who fear the Lord and desire to stand for morality. If we will not stand and be counted, we shall later fall and be trampled. What a tragedy for any child of God to sit idly by while the moral fabric of our nature is torn into shreds. Shall we not endeavour to preserve and prolong our freedom to speak of boldly the word of God?

The apostle Paul used the rights his citizenship afforded him unto the preservation of his own life and the continued spread of the gospel through him as a vessel of God (Acts 16:37; 22:25-29; 25:11; 28:19). Shall we not do the same?

Friend, don't think politics is for someone else. Every child of God should be concerned about what our politicians are doing. Our ability to freely preach the word hangs in the balance.

How long was the Egyptian captivity? Genesis 15:13 says 400 years, while Exodus 12:40 and Galatians 3:17 say 430 years. Is there a contradiction?
